CerebraIn an interview with Ekonomist, Fikret Sebilcioğlu discussed the emerging risks of recruitment in the age of artificial intelligence, highlighting the strategic role of corporate intelligence and background investigations in fraud risk management and the protection of corporate reputation for critical positions.
In his interview published in Ekonomist magazine, Fikret Sebilcioğlu, Founder and CEO of Cerebra, evaluated the new risks created by generative artificial intelligence in recruitment processes and the role of corporate intelligence efforts in managing these risks.
The ability to create realistic resumes, fake reference networks, and fabricated digital profiles in a short period of time thanks to artificial intelligence technologies requires companies to reconsider their candidate evaluation processes. Fikret Sebilcioğlu stated that background checks, especially for senior executives and critical positions, are now being viewed not merely as a security check, but as a strategic risk management tool.
In the interview, it was pointed out that in addition to verifying candidates’ education and career information, company partnerships, commercial connections, digital footprints, media visibility, conflicts of interest, and sanction lists must also be examined. The importance of conducting these studies using open-source intelligence methods, in compliance with the Personal Data Protection Law and relevant legislation, was emphasized.
Stating that the demand for background checks for critical hires in Türkiye is gradually increasing, Fikret Sebilcioğlu noted that international companies, in particular, approach candidate evaluations not only from an operational risk perspective, but also through the lenses of reputation management, sanctions compliance, and corporate governance. He expressed that with the increase in AI-generated content and digital manipulations, companies must evaluate not only the technical competencies of candidates, but also the accuracy of their declarations and the risks they may pose to the organization.
Fikret Sebilcioğlu also stated that a strong ethical culture, effective whistleblowing mechanisms, robust internal control systems, and the systematic management of conflicts of interest provide fundamental protection against fraud risks. He underlined that when a suspicion or allegation arises, conducting an independent and professional investigation is critical not only to clarifying the incident, but also to determining the root causes and preventing the recurrence of similar cases.
